THE KOONABURRA STORY
Nico’s at Koonaburra Vineyard opened in November 2008 allowing Nico, one of the owners of Koonaburra Vineyard, to indulge his passion for cooking. Nico’s has a strong Asian influence, predominantly Indonesian, which stems from his Dutch heritage and Holland’s long association with Indonesia.
Koonaburra Vineyard is owned by Shawn and Nico Duynhoven who met in Amsterdam over 30 years ago while Shawn was living and working there. They moved to Australia in the mid 70’s living mainly on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
Nico trained and worked as a builder and Shawn as a theatre nurse before their tree change brought them to Wamboin where they investigated olive farming opportunities. The soil, on the property they purchased in Wamboin, was unresponsive to agriculture and, after a very expensive venture, they moved to their current location in Bywong planting their first vines in 1998.
They produced their first variety, Sauvignon Blanc in 2002. They now have eight acres under vine with four grape varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Nico’s skill as a builder is evident in the Cellar Door and Restaurant at Koonaburra. The building is a traditional stone cottage style with heavy wooden beams and exquisite hand made furniture. The open fire, wood floors and sophisticated artwork meld to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The intimate 40 seat restaurant with its constantly evolving menu is the perfect venue for Nico to finally follow his passion.
